How Homewise can help you decide what home upgrades to make

Making home improvements in the right order can help you get the most out of your budget. Homewise looks at your whole home and builds a tailored plan around it in under 10 minutes based on property details. Find out what upgrades can have the biggest impact for your property and where to focus first.

Many people start with the upgrade they hear about most – for example, installing solar panels. A smarter approach is to start with what your home actually needs. For example, adding insulation first can reduce heat loss and make your heating system more effective. Small changes like draught-proofing can also deliver quick savings.

Three simple steps to getting your personalised home energy plan with Homewise

1. Start by entering your postcode. Homewise then pulls through key details about your home, such as the property type, size, walls and existing insulation. You can review this information and edit it if anything is not correct. This helps Homewise create a more accurate improvement plan for your home.

2. Once you have checked your details, the tool shows a breakdown of your home’s current energy performance. This screen explains how much energy your home is likely using, where heat may be escaping and the potential impact of making improvements. It gives you a starting point, so you can understand how your home is performing before you look at upgrade options.

This screen shows your home’s estimated yearly energy costs and carbon emissions. It helps you understand how much your home may cost to run and the environmental impact of the energy it uses.

You can also compare how different parts of your home are performing, including the walls, windows, heating and hot water. The star ratings help you see which areas are already working well and which ones could benefit most from improvement. This makes it easier to target the areas that matter most to you, whether that means planning bigger upgrades over time or starting with smaller changes to things like your windows or heating that can still reduce energy use, lower bills and improve comfort.

3. All of this information is then brought together into a personalised home improvement plan. After you enter your contact information, you are given a tailored Improvement Plan. This helps you see which upgrades to consider, how they could work together and what difference they could make to your energy use, bills and comfort. You can also save your progress and come back to your plan at any time.

Homewise will recommend and give advice on measures such as:

  • air/ground/water source heat pumps
  • battery storage
  • solar electricity
  • time of use tariffs
  • smart meters and more.

Your personalised dashboard houses your home improvement plan. Revisit your recommendations, explore funding options, and track your progress as you make changes to your home.

The plan also shows your EPC rating, which measures how energy efficient your home is. Homes are rated from A to G, with A being the most energy efficient. A higher EPC rating can be a sign of a home that is cheaper to run and better at keeping heat in.

The plan can also show funding options based on the improvements it recommends and where you live. For example, if you live in Scotland and your plan recommends an air source heat pump, it may highlight support such as the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan, which can help cover the cost of installing clean heating systems like heat pumps.

By breaking everything down into simple steps and clear visuals, Homewise helps you move from uncertainty to a practical plan you can have confidence in, with simple steps and visuals.

Explore funding options, compare potential savings and take action at your own pace with all your recommendations in one place.
